People should not be playing with their mobile phones during Mass, Pope Francis said Wednesday, speaking to the faithful in St Peter’s Square.
“It makes me very sad when I celebrate Mass here in the square or in [St Peter’s] Basilica and I see many mobiles raised. And it’s not only the faithful, but also many priests and bishops,” Francis said.
“Please! Mass is not a show!” he added, reminding that in Catholic Mass, the priest who celebrates “says ‘Lift up your hearts,’ and does not say ‘Lift up your mobiles to take a picture.'”
Speaking during his weekly audience, the pontiff said it was very important to “go back to basics” and rediscover the real meaning of Catholic rituals.
