Despite Government threats, thousands have gathered at Nairobi’s Uhuru Park to witness the swearing-in ceremony of Raila Odinga by The National Super Alliance (Nasa) on Tuesday 30th January 2018.
The move is likely to spark fresh confrontations in Kenya, three months after incumbent Uhuru Kenyatta won in a controversial re-run election which was totally boycotted by the opposition on the grounds that the poll was neither free nor fair.
The opposition ceremony which Government representatives described as treason is now streaming live on many platforms including youtube. Nasa released a statement claiming that the event is legal and will be peaceful.
“We intend to hold a peaceful event, in total compliance with the constitution and the law. We therefore advise those attending this historic event to observe peace and avoid confrontation with police officers at all costs. We nonetheless wish to put the [government] on notice that we will accomplish our mission come hell or high water,” Nasa said in a statement on Monday night.
