On This Day: Birthday of Senator Ike Ekweremadu


On this day: in history (1962), Ike Ekweremadu was born in Amachara Mpu in Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State. He holds both Bachelors and master’s degree in Law from the University of Nigeria, and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1987. He also holds Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Law from the University of Abuja, Nigeria.

Ike Ekweremadu began his political career from the grassroots and was elected the pioneer Chairman of Aninri Local Government Council when the Local Government was created in 1996.

Ekweremadu was appointed the Chief of Staff, Enugu State Government House and subsequently the Secretary to the Government of Enugu State between 1999 to 2003.

In 2003, Ike Ekweremadu for the first time contested in the Senatorial elections and won. He was elected a Senator to represent Enugu West Senatorial District on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He was subsequently re-elected in 2007and 2011 senatorial elections respectively.

Ike Ekweremadu was the Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate for three consecutive (6th, 7th and 8th) senate.

In September 2009, he was appointed to lead the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) ad hoc committee to work for the return of constitutional order in the Niger Republic.He was elected First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament and emerged the Speaker of the regional parliament in August 2011.
Ike Ekweremadu holds the National Honour of the Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR).
