Death toll in Iran-Iraq earthquake rises to 328

The death toll from the earthquake that struck the Iran-Iraq border region has risen to 328, with 2,530 injured, according to Iran’s Interior Ministry.

The Iranian provinces of Kermanshah and Illam were reported to be the worst hit in the quake, which struck late Sunday. Kurdish cities in Iraq, such as Halabja, Erbil and Duhok, were also affected.

The earthquake’s epicentre was in a remote mountainous region of Iraq, some 200 kilometres north-east of Baghdad and 400 kilometres west of Tehran, according to the US Geological Survey.

Many families spent the night outdoors, after aftershocks were felt in the early hours of Monday.
