On This Day: 17 Years Since the First Ever YouTube Video

On this day: in history (2005),  the first YouTube video “Me at the zoo” was uploaded by the site’s Co-founder Jawed Karim, with the username “jawed” and recorded by his high school friend Yakov Lapitsky.


YouTube is an American online video sharing and social media platform, which was bought in 2006 by Google for $1.65 billion. It was launched on February 14, 2005, by Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim. It is the second most visited website, right after Google itself. YouTube has more than one billion monthly users who collectively watch more than one billion hours of videos each day. As of May 2019, videos were being uploaded at a rate of more than 500 hours of content per minute.
