It was on this day in history (2020), that the first coronavirus disease (COVID-19) case was confirmed in Lagos State, Nigeria by the Federal Ministry of Health. It was the first case to be reported in Nigeria after the outbreak in China in January 2020.
The case was an Italian citizen working in Nigeria who returned from Milan, Italy to Lagos, Nigeria on the 25th of February 2020. He was confirmed by the Virology Laboratory of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, part of the Laboratory Network of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control. The patient was confirmed to be clinically stable at the time the case was discovered, with no serious symptoms, and was moved to the Infectious Disease Hospital in Yaba, Lagos for proper medical attention.
